 New MTO from Auto-gyro

Our good friend and magical mountain pass flyer (Cammie Patch) posted these pics @ RWF. I can not find these @ auto-gyro.com or elsewhere so it must be a dealer insider reveal. In any case here are the pics.

Yes, anything that stops you seeing the cracks in the airframe is most awesome :laughing

If it is one of Cammies, if you fly fast enough thru a ravine and the motor stops, you can climb out and land on top pf the ravine.... :gyro2 :pop :yoda2 :Wolvie

You do have to activate the optional Canyon Climber system. It may be a dealer installed option, not sure.

Well that was no ravine it was the Snake River and I was there and took about 50 to 70 pictures.
It's the only time I've heard her make excuses that we not true.
All 3 of us were trusting our 912's that day.

Here are just a few pictures Cammie is in the blue Caludis and Kent is in the blue MTO.

Yeah, that's right, I remember the pics.... it is beautiful scenery.

She had a video of flying below the top of the ravine or canyon walls and a few of us had a go at her that it was adding to the risk flying below the top of the walls.... restricted the lz's available....

She said if you fly fast enough, you can climb out and land on the top.... something along those lines :eek :laughing

I thought it was funny anyway :pop

If my engine stops, I look somewhere below my ankles.... coz that is the area I will be landing in.... doesn't matter how fast I am flying :yoda2 :Wolvie

I have no doubt that Cammie is a good professional pilot...most of the time,...but her adrenalin rush took over her brain , she was called out in it, and then her enormous ego she has acquired by accomplishing much more than an average pilot....took over and she just wont admit error to lesser pilots ....in her mind....that dare challenge her.

To be very honest, the more I flew my Helicycle, the more euphoric I became, and flying what was to me the most awesome machine I had ever piloted ...was being seriously jeopardized by this euphoria on each flight. I tried to fight it, and along with other reasons, made the best ADM move .....sell it before it kills me. I personally could not keep my euphoria under control.

My sub conscious was uneasy, and it settled down to a more peaceful level when I sold it.

So, in Cammies defence, I can understand her euphoria doing that maneuver, but will be the first to tell her to get her euphoria in check. Never met her, but I can tell you she would not listen to me.

You guys are looking at this all wrong....
As long as you don't mind the destruction of your machine and a few months in traction in a hospital, there are literally a shitload of usable LZ's when your engine goes out!

Well all that said...I like the new MTO look. It's just different enough to be uniquely styled and looks like lots of good upgrades
and with style in mind too.

Now to find one and try it out!

There are some very interesting specs like extended range, 185km/h top speed etc. I went to Sun'Fun yesterday but did not get over to Autogyro - going back tomorrow all day and will have a good look. They claim to have improved ground and flying handling so it will be interesting to see. Tail is slightly different, landing gear looks wider. Can't see the nose wheel. Adjustable pedals is a good thing. Front and rear panels, additional storage.

I know she was laughed at a lot about this, and it is certainly not something to recommend to someone to fly below the canyon edge and be able to 'climb' out, but I'm pretty sure it should be possible if you are flying fast enough, simply a conservation of energy thing. If one is flying at the minimum speed to hold altitude, then of course there is no additional energy to temporarily translate into a vertical vector. But it does make sense that if you are flying well in excess of this speed then you will be able to translate your excess vertical speed or kinetic energy into vertical speed or climb, until you bleed of the excess kinetic energy. Not something to be recommended of course, but certainly possible.

Summary: High and slow = ok. Low and fast = ok. Low and slow = DEAD.

In the 3500+ hours I have in gyros, ranging from single place Bensens to 18-A's and J-2's I've never been able, even flying fast, to climb more than a few feet before the airspeed bleeds off... If you were right next to the wall of the "ravine" and you were flying at near VNE, then maybe if you were 10 feet below the rim of the ravine you'd be able to salvage it... otherwise, not possible.

It would be very interesting to actually measure this for different speeds. Whatever the amount is I would still imagine it's proportional to speed, Kinetic energy being proportional to the square of the velocity. I'll try to remember my basic physics of Kinetic Energy equals ½ MVsquared and see what I can come up with, at least in theory.

Yes the math checks out but in practice: in a fix-wing, your potential is your height and you can trade it for speed and vice-versa without adding more energy (thrust) from the prop, but in the autorotating rotor the energy store is diminished quickly because it turns drag into lift (by design), and the thrust from the prop offsets the high drag. Without the engine you run out of energy quickly because of the high drag of the rotor. Right?
'Scuse me for theorising when I dont even have a licence... I'm just joining in on the conversation. And trying to understand it properly too.

I have checked out the new MTO today at Sun N Fun.
The tail is way smaller than the old one was but they have extended the stinger.
So it is further out. Also it comes with a tail wheel.
Seats and pedals are adjustable and it has an extended range of a 6.4 hour flight....
WHO DAFAQUE wants to fly that long in one sitting?????
Non of your bladders could hold long enough!!!
Lots of people today. Visited with Greg and Abid too.
We ate some killer ribs and cheese burgers!!!! Yeah baby!!!!!

You are absolutely correct. Airplanes are known to generate lift. Rotorcraft dissipates the damn lift!
We have so much parasite drag it's not even funny.
There is no climb! None! Zero! A momentary pitch up is all we get.
We do not have enough coefficient lift to even calculate it because the rotors are not powered unlike the helicopter's.
If one decides to pick to fly the very middle of a canyon that's 100 feet wide and fly below the top surface level there is only one way an engine out will end....and it's not by outclimbing and landing the gyro.
