For what reason do they hack accounts? What are they doing? Looking for bank details or just spamming?

How do they make $$ out of hacking all these things? What is the payoff for them doing it?

Or, are they just trying to disrupt everything to be assholes?

A lot of them are banking on the fact that people use the same passwords for a lot or all of their online accounts. So once they get your email and real name, they can start scouring the internet looking for other accounts you may have, then they can use the credentials to get into other systems you may be linked to like bank accounts, or other nefarious activities.

There are basically two general types of nefarious hackers: Those who want to break the site to try and get user lists for spam lists and/or identity theft; and those who just want to post links.

The first type gets paid for selling lists of "verified email accounts" to spam houses and "verified" names, phones, addresses and passwords to both spammers and identity theft enterprises. The second type is typically paid per click on links they post. It may be a penny for 100 clicks, but if one is in an economy where an extra dollar a week is a fortune, it starts to make sense. It is important to note that the second type would not exist at all if people weren't so stupid and never clicked on the links.

There are variants. Some of the link posters post links to malware sites and other malicious sites instead of direct sales sites. These may be involved in identity theft or other evil deeds. Some of the really clever hackers are interested in manipulating the software of the site to continue to send them new passwords and password changes on an ongoing basis. The most dangerous of these would be one who can break the site, get in, manipulate the code to send constant updates as membership updates occur, and finally leave without a trace....or so I am told...
