This is how Australia reacted after a mass shooting in 1996 that killed 35 people. They banned assault weapons, collected the guns and destroyed them. We have seen no mass shootings since. In the past 164 days, the USA has sadly seen 133 mass shootings. With now 50 people dead from the Orlando shooting, mass shootings now account for 207 deaths in the USA this year alone. This statistic doesn't even account for fire arm related homicide and suicide. Freedom doesn't come from the barrel of an assault weapon, only death.

My opinion :- if military style assault weapons were to be banned, followed by $100,000 fine and/or a 5year + jail term for those caught not complying then even the criminals would also more than likely get rid of them. (Most criminals are basically cowards with false delusions of grandeur and they feel they need a crutch to back themselves up.)
I don't think too many disagree with the 2nd Amendment (December 15, 1791) that gives you the right to bear arms, but it was written back when a fire arm was an inaccurate single shot blunderbuss with very short effective range, and which also took some time to reload, and was often as dangerous to the person using it as it was to the person it was aimed at. In this day and age I can't help feeling that an update to the legislation would certainly be appropriate
Having said that, I firmly believe that any firearm wielding "terrorist" should be shot dead at first safely available opportunity. A jail term and/or a lengthy court case is a waste of resources on a useless piece of shit.

The Internet seems to be undecided as to exactly what type of firearms were available in 1791 when the second amendment was written. I would venture to say it hadn't envisioned the military assault weapons that can spit out "X".amount of death per second.

Well it is very simple to understand what our second amendment is saying.
A well regulated militia gives the government the right to ban certain types of guns.
So we are losing out on that one phrase.
At the same time we ought to have the same firepower as a tyrannical government who is trying to abolish our rights.
