Jury has been selected and the trial begins Monday Feb 1st.

Been waiting almost 3 years to find out the details about why this guy turned serial killer . He had everything he wanted , plenty of money , must have been a thrill kill or some similar evil.

His partner Mark Smich , who is also charged with the murder goes by the handle of SAY10 and some people speculate it could have been an occult slaughter/sacrifice thing. Weird or what.

Canada has a strict no-publication ban on cases like this until the trial actually starts. Monday we should hear the rest of the story. Later they still have to go to trial for killing the girl (Laura) and killing Dellens dad , who was a retired airline captain.

I will have more pictures to post later and wanted to bump this thread because the trial is starting

Gabor or Gordon or whoever , if you want you can move this to general discussion in case anyone else wants to follow the case. You can decide

The publication bans have been lifted , but they do not apply to the USA anyway , so we are free to say whatever we want.

Thanks bud.

Anyone else here like to follow true crime ? I always have .

My interest has always been in how they get solved . Especially the difficult cold cases with minimum evidence

Usually comes down to a gut instinct by an old salt detective , or a stray bit of information from the general public.

And that applies in this murder case , Dellen Millard would have gotten away with it , he used burner phones , incinerated the victim in a remote farm area , hid the stolen truck in an enclosed trailer in his moms driveway in an upscale district in a different city.

A week earlier a man working in a construction area had remembered a couple of guys test driving his truck he had for sale and recalled the unusual "AMBITION" tattoo on the guys wrist. He figured something was hinkey because they walked in to his construction yard (hid their own vehicle) , they were nervous and after seeing how big the truck owner was they did not try to hijack him.

Anyway when the Tim Bosma truck Hijacking happened it hit the news and the construction guy called the tip into police. Turns out years earlier an old salt detective remembered pulling some punks over and one had an "AMBITION" tattoo on his wrist . He looked back at his old notes , found out it was Dellen , and paid him a friendly visit at his multi million dollar hangar. Figured no way would he could be involved.

Asked a few friendly questions , spotted deception , did a search on the anonymous burner phone used on the first truck test drive , records showed it also pinged from a tower near Dellens home , same thing for the second test drive , pinged at Dellens home and then near the victims house , and a few minutes later the phone was turned off and likely destroyed.

Based on that they hauled him in for questioning , put it on the news , a neighbor where the the enclosed trailer was parked called police and they found the stolen truck inside.

Most of us pilots understand triangulation of radio signals or directional beacons or whatever.

A cell tower has a circle of 10 panels that fan out in a pie shape , if you drive by a tower your phone gets handed from one panel (directional antenna) to another . Plus of course your phone is constantly communicating with other towers searching out the next strongest signal to hand you over if necessary.

Each panel and tower also can tell when a weak signal is getting stronger (approaching) and gets weaker as you depart . With those bits of information police can track the movements of a phone , and in most cases with triangulation from several towers they can be precise.

I am not an expert and just using general descriptions so bare that in mind . Plus not much of this is ever made public . The phone companies archive every single digit and a lot of it ends up in that new huge server building in Utah. If police ever need the info it is available (search warrant)

The phone companies get paid for the info , it is very profitable for them , they dont do it for any other reason. They also make millions of dollars selling tracking info to big companies. A shopping center knows where all the phones come from and can concentrate advertising there . It contains no personal identification , it simply maps out the movement of the phones. I think it is often just low tech am or fm signals used for that.

Police with a warrant can request and pay for records with all the details if a crime is suspected. Even the anonymous burner phones can be pinpointed almost house to house in some cases. Doesn't tell them who owns the phone of course but it can show where it has been minute to minute

Same as the Tim Bosma murder which is the topic of this thread , police tracked the burner phone from Dellens house to first test drive location , and a few days later on the second test drive , and saw the victims phone and the burner phone go down the road side by side until they were both turned off and destroyed right after the murder,

Pretty simple when you think about it. Now police know the route was through the small city of Brantford and they got everybody and every business with CCV cameras to check for a stolen black truck around 10 pm and they found one grainy video with Dellens personal blue Yukon following the stolen black truck .

Cops did all that in the first day. Mostly because the victim was a straight up family guy who should have been back home in 10 minutes so they put homicide detectives on it right away.

.

EDIT to ADD:
The map with the cell towers is from a recent missing person case in Winnipeg , Mrs Thelma Krull disappeared on a walk last year and has never been found. She had a modern phone and with all the surrounding cell towers they could make a good triangulation of where she walked (red dots) and where her phone was turned off (red X )

And of course some phones have GPS built in ... good for tracking missing people , not so good for privacy. I wouldn't doubt some day every phone will map where we are and there aint nothing we will be able to do about it

You are all very close with Sociopath, but I think you will agree, the correct diagnosis is Psychopath.

Here is a link to an excellent article describing both in detail.....enjoy and Ernie, keep us posted.

People also don't realise that speed cameras and CCTV cameras and even police cruisers are also constantly scanning tags and cell phones, especially when someone's phone is Bluetooth enabled... so the police might ask a suspect if they were in such and such an area last Tuesday at noon? The suspect might say no, but the police can easily prove otherwise from data from so many places...

Privacy is definitely a thing of the past :badluck :dizzy :yoda2 :Wolvie

On the subject of CCTV cameras .... the guy who got murdered for his truck (Tim Bosma) lived out in the country in a new home and had no cameras yet .... the truck was hijacked after dark (10 pm) .... our small rural highways had no cameras ... police only found one grainy black and white video taken through a store window.

Not enough for police to make a positive ID , could not tell how many people were involved , could never build a murder case from just that , wealthy Dellen Millard had already started to lawyer up .... the body had not been found yet .... and guess what happened next

Police got a warrant for the brand new 6 million dollar hangar that Dellen had inherited from his father .... turns out it had high definition security cameras that recorded a whole bunch of stuff.

.

How's that for KARMA with a pinch of DARWIN

Dellen Millard in front of his red truck and toy hauler. Heading to Baja with his racing Jeep a few years ago.

The guy on the left is his mechanic , good guy , not involved in any crime.

Dellen hid the stolen truck in the trailer after the murder.

The other picture is police towing it away from his mothers home.

This story has more twists and turns than a Hollywood Movie

Dellen Millard's mom (Madeline B.) is a fine upstanding citizen living in a nice home in a different city

I feel sorry for her , in many ways she is a victim too

Thinking he was clever , Dellen parked his trailer , containing the murdered man's truck , in her driveway

Notice the (Tim Bosma) missing-persons poster in her front yard

ahh the irony !!!!!

Grandfather Carl Millard was a true Wolverine

Honest , hard working , didn't put up with crap from anybody , especially bureaucrats

Started in the 1950's with a fleet of old DC3's and 4's hauling freight and car parts all over North America.

He was one of the first guys to haul thoroughbred race horses from track to track. Even the horses loved flying with Carl . More about that later.

Back in the early days Carl bought a huge WW2 Wooden Hangar at Toronto International airport. The airport authority owned the land , Carl was an upstart with a growing airline and the bureaucrats were always nit-picking him for something.

One weekend Carl said Puck-em , He hired all the building moving trucks in the country and moved the huge hangar to private land on the other side of the airport. Pictures to come later

Wolverines !!!!

Grandfather Carl on the right , His son Wayne on the left , Grandson Dellen in the middle . Circa 1999

Another picture from 1999 , Dellen had just gone solo both helicopter and fixed wing , his father Wayne is on the left , and his grandfather Carl is on the right

His Father Wayne was a well respected Captain with Air Canada , flew 737 , 757 , helicopters , etc.

Grandfather Carl was an old school pilot with a fleet of DC3 & DC4 for freight and passengers

.

I knew Wayne from back in the day. Nice guy , good pilot. Drove an old pickup truck and dressed like a farmer when he dropped by the airport on his days off. You would never know how wealthy he was. After the airlines he flew helicopters for a while H500 B206 B47 . Not sure if he owned them or leased them.

He was filming the controversial seal hunt on the East coast . Hotbed of protesters , hunters , police , and fisheries guys. Police wanted to seize Wayne's film and he said no. Cops threw him to the ground , took all his equipment , charged him with obstructing justice or something.

But Wayne was smart , didn't resist , didn't even hire a lawyer . Came to court , brought a screen and film projector and showed the judge what actually happened . Unknown to police and prosecutors Wayne had a second camera that was sitting on the cowl of his B206 . Judge saw the film and could see Wayne was just a private guy , standing off to the side taking video and it was the cops who accosted him . Judge threw the case out and I heard the cops got fired.

Heard Wayne died a few years ago , he was in his 70's I think , had no idea maybe his kid killed him. Completely bizarre. Wayne was the kind of guy who would never rub anyone the wrong way.

Didn't know the grandfather Carl Millard but heard plenty of stories. They say he was a hard guy to work for and if you made it through the first week he might let you stay for another week. Carl realized you couldn't be a wimp and run an airline . Guys who wanted training would have to pay Carl , sleep in the hangar , work like slaves , but if they survived all that and got their commercial rating he would give them their money back and hire them at a decent wage. Lots of guys started their airline careers through Carl.

Grandfather Carl Millard bought one of the first Hansa jets , Hansa was the German version of Learjet but never became very popular

Carl was the first to deadstick a jet down to a perfect landing. He was above clouds in crappy weather , ceiling was only about 100 feet from the ground , contaminated fuel , both engines quit.

He had a good idea where he was , had one radio beacon to go by , descended blind all the way down through the clouds , broke through at 100 feet above the threshold and landed

He did a lot of charters with it then sold it to Florida where it worked for a lot of years and now it is a coral reef off the coast where divers explore and practice underwater rescues.

Found the picture of Carl Millard moving his hangar in 1961

Government airport bureaucrats were always giving him a hassle so told them to go to hell and he moved the hangar to his own property on the other side of the airport.

Went straight across the runways and grass , ATC had to hold some flights till the runway was clear , Carl didnt put up with crap from anybody.

Used it till about 2010 and then tore it down.

Almost done with the history . Tomorrow begins the murder trial and all the gory details. Wanted to give some of the (good) family background , still have no idea why the kid turned murderer , tomorrow we find out I hope.

Snip of grandfather Carl started in 1946 and by 1980 had a fleet of 21 DC3 & 4 hauling freight.

Carl and his first plane , likely 1940's

Carl got a good reputation hauling race horses. The horses loved to fly with him too . Carl designed a long covered ramp and the horses would walk right up without getting skittish or stressed.

Besides they knew he served in flight meals . Carl said he would rather spend 15 minutes shoveling the horse shit afterwards than 2 hours fighting to get them into the back of a DC3 like some of the other operators did.
