I read your excellent post several times and have come to believe I would have hopefully reacted with the same choice as you.

Carb ice on Rotax engine's appears to be more common than I thought....some sort of carb heat now seems warranted on my machine.

I did not know that the cyclic stick does a better job of quickly turning an airframe 180° than a pedal turn can (Birdy's post).

Thank you for sharing your unfortunate experience.....you have probably helped more people than you'll ever know.

I had 2 forced landings from carb ice in my 582 powered Air Command. One of these forced me down in a fresh combined soybean field. After sitting in the field a few minutes, the ice melted and I soon was climbing out of the soybean stubble.

It's not just 2 strokes that are damned with icing. My Lycoming's carb in the Schweizer 269CB iced up. Wasn't cold and wasn't anything unusual. Thank God for collective on helicopters is all I am going to say.

I was flying a Navy Chaplin around the Philippines and was clearing some mountains when the carb on the C-172 froze up .
I got it cleared as soon as I pulled the carb heat on .
But it got our attention .
There was nothing but mountain and jungle to land on .

The day (last year... warm with high humidity )... that I saw a thick coating of frost on my 912 carbs after a practise ..... I began to research getting the water jacket coolant carb-heat like Autogyro supply in their MTO kits. Desmon mentioned he had a set for sale that came with his new gyro ... but not needed due to his installation of his 912iS engine ... YESS .... we installed them a couple of months ago ... one less thing to worry about ...Hopefully!!!!!! :)
