I built and flew a VW powered gyrocopter in 1976. It had an 1835 cc engine with aluminum cylinders. It flew great. Had a fantastic idle and was a major improvement on the Macs that everyone else was flying.

That's a great looking machine! :like

+2 Freebird, the 1835 was a good jump over the 1600's and very reliable. Nice looking and very clean.

I like vw powered gyros, I wish there were more of them, Rick Abercrombie has a VW Bensen that he has been flying since the 1980's, he was doing long cross countries with it, even flew it to Bensen days, from the Atlanta Ga area.
He mounted the engine to drive the prop from the flywheel end.

That really makes sense, as the flywheel end would tend to block cooling airflow mounted the other way.
The weak spot was the space between the cylinders which would melt the rear cylinder if it didn't get enough air. There was a baffle that had to be installed there when the cylinder head was put on. Probably the only one like that.
