I thought that you could not use an experimental aircraft for hire in any sort of capacity? They use RV-4's it looks like, http://www.skycombatace.com/

They can always apply for a LODA and it is perfectly legal then.

There is ways around everything... when I used to fly cessnas, I wasnt allowed to even take any money as share in the cost... so, I am proud to say I never once took a penny off anyone to help pay for the cost.... not one red cent.... and that is 100% the truth.... But everyone who went for a fly with me each bought a souvenir pen that cost $40 if they didn't want to buy a souvenir pen... they didnt get to go for a ride... The pens were awesome... they even had proper writing on them... it read ' Been In Cessna' Yes, you read it here... BIC was indeed written on the souvenir pen Some of them were even used/stolen... which made them 'collectable'

But you cannot take an aerial picture of someones house from your gyro and accept money for a photograph.
Oh wait, the rules were written by a Gov agency, Now I understand!!

The LODA seems to be the magic bullet, these days. I was speaking to a CFI in South Florida who got clobbered by the FAA when he built his Xenon. They said he didn't build 51%, so they wouldn't give him an Airworthiness Certificate (a problem that comes up from time to time with some of the new fiberglass/plastic/carbon fibre machines of late). With as much money as he had in the beast, you can imagine the vacuousity of the situation.
The ultimate "fix" for this case was to allow an Airworthiness Certificate as an Airshow Exhibition Aircraft, then layer that with a LODA allowing usage for rental and flight instruction (dual, not solo). The major downside is that he must exhibit the aircraft in a few airshows or events a year to maintain the Airworthiness Certificate. The "Events" must be logged in the aircraft log and there is some additional paperwork associated with proving that the events "qualify." Of course, it is going to be really interesting if he ever tries to sell the beast.

The skycombatace website says that they use the Extra 330LC and Waco aircraft. I believe the Extra is certified. Not sure what they actually use......
