Question: I was told that the reason he can do those maneuvers has something to do with a solid rotor head or something mechanical. In layman's terms, what is the difference between what he is flying and say a Bell Jet Ranger? Are these just skilled stunts and the helicopter makes no difference? If it is a mechanical thing, what if any are the trade offs?

a ridged rotor on any helicopter will do these aerobatics [MBB 105 117 145 etc.] An articulated rotor will do loops rolls split s aerobatics [Sikorsky Hughes etc.] A simi articulated will do loops rolls split s aerobatics [Brantley] A simi ridged will do loops [Kaman 225] A simi ridged under slung unloaded will kill you. [bell, Hiller. Robinson etc.] A simi ridged under slung with force spring elasimeric trunion will do loops rolls and split s [Bell 222]

(From memory .... in one of my books ) ..... Igor Sikorsky either witnessed or watched the film of the first helicopter to do a loop .... it was a S52 and over the factory parking lot at the Connecticut factory.
He said something like .... veee vill nott do datt again ...... he was mostly worried the piston engine might quit when inverted.
Sikorsky also was the first to mount a camera on a rotor hub to film the flexing of the blades in flight .... kinda scary to watch how much the blade whips up and down with cyclic pitch ..... and those were dope and fabric blades .... Igor said a bunch of pilots and engineers walked out after watching the film and refused to ever set foot in a helicopter again.
