famous gambler Amarillo Slim was visiting a ranch to buy some livestock , made the deal , then drove some distance and the same guy was there to open the gate for him .... turned out they were twin brothers who owned the ranch and that gave him an idea.
Amarillo knew of a longstanding bet that nobody could ever win .... it was to eat a quail a day for 30 days straight .... apparently it is a pungent meat and after a few days you cannot eat another one without throwing up.
So Amarillo recruited twins to alternate between the eating sessions and he won a pile of money.

JAKE! wrote: I could eat Quail every day. It's like crunchy chicken ,not bad at all. Unless southern Quail is different. I think you are right and Amarillo is right .... I have his book here somewhere and If I recall certain Texas(?) Quail feed on something (poisonous plant or something) that will cause humans to get digestive problems if they eat the meat .... something like that.

. Not sure if this applies but I was curious about the ..."not able to eat a quail a day for 30 days" ... and found a wiki that says .......
Quail that have fed on hemlock may induce acute renal failure due to accumulation of toxic substances from the hemlock in the meat; this problem is referred to as "coturnism".
And it also says .....
A persistent myth holds that it is impossible to eat quail every day for a month. This has been the subject of a number of proposition bets; however, it has been achieved on several occasions.
I found my Amarillo Slim book but could not find the quail-proposition bet so will keep looking.
Amarillo was an interesting character and has some great stories .... he said if you mailed him a box of horseshit he would be happy as hell and dig through the whole thing trying to find the horse.
