Medical Excise Tax on Retail Receipt. This is an image of a sales receipt from Cabela's, a popular sporting goods store. The 2.3% Medical Excise Tax that began on January 1st is supposed to be "hidden" from the consumer, but it's been brought to the public's attention by hunting and fishing store Cabela's who have refused to hide it and are showing it as a separate line item tax on their receipts, the email states. I did some research and found directly from the IRS's website information that PROVES this to be true and an accurate portrayal of something hidden in "Obamacare" that I was not aware of! Now being skeptical of this I went to the IRS website and found this! Q1.
What is the medical device excise tax? A1. Section 4191 of the Internal Revenue Code
imposes an excise tax on the sale of certain medical devices by the manufacturer or importer of the device.
Q2. When does the tax go into effect? A2. The tax applies to sales of taxable medical devices after Dec. 31, 2012.
Q3. How much is the tax? A3. The tax is 2.3 percent of the sale price of the taxable medical device. See Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510, Excise Taxes, and Notice 2012-77 for additional information on the determination of sale price.
IRS.gov

So being more curious I clicked on "Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510." And what do I find under "MEDICAL DEVICES" under "MANUFACTURERS TAXES"? The following discussion of manufacturers taxes applies to the tax on: Guns and amo; Sport fishing equipment; Fishing rods and fishing poles; Electric outboard motors; Fishing tackle boxes; Bows, quivers, broadheads, and points; Arrow shafts; Coal; Taxable tires; Gas guzzler automobiles; and Vaccines. IRS.gov
I think we have definitely been fooled, if we believe that the Affordable Care Act is all about health care. It truly does appear to be nothing more than a bill laden with a whole lot of taxes that we the people have yet to be aware of.
Please pass this on . I am still incredulous that this can go on .Where is our press ? I guess it’s just like Nancy Pelosi said…….We have to pass it to see what is in it . What is next? What else is there we do not know about? I am sick to death about our government

Son of a Bitch!
That bitch Pelosi and bastard Reid!! If I ever get the chance to piss on their graves I will.

All I got to say is whoever faked those receipts has talent.

Hey Gabe does the image have those pixel thingies in it that insures it is a fake?

The receipts aren't fake, it's the wording behind the picture, Cabela's mistakenly had that tax on their registers.

Snopes does lean to the left ( slobbering Ovomit lovers) , so make sure you fact check your fact checking.

What the fuck? How would it get on Cabellas if someone didn't intentionally put it on there?
What the hell in Cabellas would ever be considered a medical device? It does not make sense no matter who put it on there.
Is this some kind of desperate super secret hidden tax scheme to fund something that is going broke?

Ray,

Did you read the Snopes page? It explains it all:

"The answer was that vendors typically use upgraded sales software at the beginning of each year which is programmed to handle changes in tax laws that have just gone into effect, and on 1 January 2013 Cabela's found that their upgraded software was improperly applying the medical device excise tax to all purchases rather than just those of qualifying items."

"Some readers have incorrectly interpreted the listing of federal excise taxes on forms of sport fishing equipment, archery equipment, tires, coal, and gas guzzlers in Chapter 5 of IRS Publication 510 as evidence that those items are now being taxed as medical devices. This interpretation is incorrect: those items are all subject to excise taxes that were enacted well prior to, and have nothing to do with, the excise tax on medical devices created by the PPACA. The excise taxes on sport fishing equipment, for example, were enacted in the 1950s through the Sport Fish Restoration Act, and the excise tax on archery equipment was enacted in 1975 to help support the Wildlife Restoration Program."

If Snopes isn't your cup of tea, this is from The Blaze.com:
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/01/04/why-was-a-2-3-medical-excise-tax-showing-up-on-receipts-from-sporting-goods-giant-cabelas/

"A series of phone calls to both the corporate offices of Cabela’s as well as three Texas outlets where the taxes have been showing up yielded what appears to be a satisfactory explanation and resolution.

Customer service reps for Cabela’s stated the added tax was “a computer glitch that has been fixed.” In one case, a representative offered to take my receipt information over the phone and expedite a refund to my credit card. Cash purchases that were hit with the extra 2.3% tax must return to the store for a cash refund."

As far as the actual IRS taxes, the link at the bottom of your first post is just a part of the overall excise taxes found here:

Okay let's start with this one. There are qualifying items in Cabellas???????? That text alone infers there are medical devices in Cabellas!!! And that shit alone pisses me off that they are taxing people that are sick and injured. Damn Obama why not kick them in the ribs???? You could get more tax revenue you asshole if you break a few ribs.
Even though the people got refunds Snopes did not deny people were taxed. Why in the world that doesn't cause rage is beyond me. I'm surprised Snopes took a break from kissing Obama's ass long enough to respond. Idiots! Everywhere! Fucking idiots!

I shouldn't have but I clicked on that link and it made me even more angry. What I see is income redistribution from those that get paychecks to those that refuse to get paychecks. We pay a $.75 tax in addition to Obamacare premiums on each flu shot. They are simply generating more revenue (taxes) off the middle class to spend through trickery. They weren't getting enough through payroll taxes so they did an end around.

They are charging an excise tax on bow and arrows!!!!
A tax of 10% of the sale price is imposed on many articles of sport fishing equipment sold by the manufacturer. This includes any parts or accessories sold on or in connection with the sale of those articles.

Pay this tax with Form 720. No tax deposits are required.

Sport fishing equipment includes all the following items.

Fishing rods and poles (and component parts), fishing reels, fly fishing lines, and other fishing lines not over 130 pounds test, fishing spears, spear guns, and spear tips.

Items of terminal tackle, including leaders, artificial lures, artificial baits, artificial flies, fishing hooks, bobbers, sinkers, snaps, drayles, and swivels (but not including natural bait or any item of terminal tackle designed for use and ordinarily used on fishing lines not described in (1)).

The following items of fishing supplies and accessories: fish stringers, creels, bags, baskets, and other containers designed to hold fish, portable bait containers, fishing vests, landing nets, gaff hooks, fishing hook disgorgers, and dressing for fishing lines and artificial flies.

Fishing tip-ups and tilts.

Fishing rod belts, fishing rodholders, fishing harnesses, fish fighting chairs, fishing outriggers, and fishing downriggers.

Damn bastards.
And I found out today that Bernie Sanders took a taxpayer funded honeymoon to the soviet union under the guise of a "mayor's meeting"!!!
The more i find out about politicians the more I should stay home lest I meet one face to face.

No, what i'm saying is that the receipt is legit, whoever programmed Cabela's cash register system made a mistake and put that extra fee in there under the incorrect category.
