Just saw "The Martian" last night, in which Matt Damon stars. I thought it was pretty good.

In the lengthy credits at the end of the movie, I saw many times the name "Gabor" & "Kovacs". The credits roll by too fast to count them. I watch them to see where a movie was filmed. At the end, it showed it was a product of the Hungarian Film Board...

I didn't see any mention of Florida. Why is that???

Out there in the internet world, I found out that the outdoor movie scenes were made partially from scenes filmed in Jordan's desert hinterlands, & then green-roomed into the movie in Budapest.

Well the name Kovacs means Smith and it is as popular as Smith here in the U.S.
In the old days when communist bastards took over and anything that even remotely was considered foreign or aristocratic they have taken them to work camps where they died.
So the smart ones have changed their names.
My family was one of the richest aristocrats in Hungary under the name of Aba a direct decent of Attila the Hun's and we owned the the northern part of Hungary that is now in Slovakia and called Košice. (Kassa in Hungarian)
But the survivor instinct dictated to become a Kovacs.
They still took my grandfather to work camp because everyone knew who he was despite the name change.
When he finally was let go he came back set down at the table, told my grandmother that he came home to die. He was apparently in the water drip prison. In a cell where they ran dripping water on their shaved heads and they had to stand over a channel that had water running constantly between their feet. Apparently the monotone dripping water on top of the head will cause psychological disturbance and eventually they go mad.
So he ate his dinner and went to bed, laid down and died.
That's why you see the name Kovacs so often.
Gábor is Gabriel in English.
:)

You have to understand how much cheaper they can produce movies there.
I can't even keep up with all the movies that were produced there.
For one Budapest is one of a kind place.
Perfect background for movies.
The American Dollar goes a long way there!!!
Yeah I see a bunch of Hungarian actors and actresses too

Well here is a short list of all the Hungarian people that you probably never knew of carrying Attila's DNA :)
Copy and paste of course :rofl
I only copied entertainment because the list is boring...... :argue

Famous Hungarian actors include Tony Curtis a film actor most popular in the 50s and 60s;
Rachel Weisz an Academy Award winning actress;
and world-famous Hollywood star Drew Barrymore who has Hungarian heritage on her mother's side.
Actor Adrien Brody is also of Hungarian descent on his mother's side, and interestingly he recently played Harry Houdini in a mini-series about the master illusionist.
Houdini himself had Hungarian origins and was actually born in Budapest.
Other Hungarian actors include Peter Falk best known for his role in the Columbo TV series;
actor Mickey Hargitay who was born in Budapest and was also crowned Mr Universe in 1955;
Hollywood actress Goldie Hawn;
Béla Lugosi famous for his role as Count Dracula in the original 1931 film;
and Mariska Hargitay most famous for her role as Detective Olivia Benson in Law and Order: SVU.
The list just goes on and on but we can't not mention Joaquin Phoenix who had some Hungarian ancestry on his mother's side, and Jerry Seinfeld who had Hungarian heritage on his father's side.
We also can't forget Zsa Zsa Gabor either who was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936 before moving to the US where she was an actress and socialite. She married 9 times (!!) including once to Conrad Hilton.
We must also mention Johnny Weissmüller who was a champion swimmer in the 1920s who won 5 Olympic gold medals, but was also a famous actor playing the role of Tarzan in 12 different Tarzan films in the 30s and 40s.
But Hungarians have also been successful behind-the-scenes, especially in Hollywood. Famous Hungarians include film producer Andy Vajna, producer and director Sir Alexander Korda and his brother Zoltán Korda, director George Cukor, film mogul and founder of Paramount Pictures Adolph Zukor, and film executive and founder of Fox Film Corporation, William Fox.
Although William Fox sold this business to settle a debt, his name lives on in the form of Fox News and 20th Century Fox.
Of course world-famous composers Kodály, Liszt, Bartók, Lehár and Erkel are widely known to be Hungarian, but did you know that there are Hungarians across many other genres?
For example, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is Hungarian;
Paul Simon a Grammy Award winning guitarist has Hungarian parents; Alanis Morissette has a Hungarian mum;
rocker-brothers Mark Knopfler and David Knofler of Dire Straits have a Hungarian dad;
and punk-rocker, Zoli Téglás, of the bands Pennywise and Ignite is also a proud Hungarian.
Of course behind the iconic facepaint Gene Simmons from KISS is also Hungarian.

Nick Tesla the man who told Edison to bugger off and introduced Westinghouse electric lights at the worlds fair!

Giving us A/C electric power!

PS, He was also the true inventor of wireless transmissions AKA radio. not Marconi.... :bunny

Dang how much time and money have they spent looking for Matt Damon?

Telsa was genius, Edison was no dummy, but He was connected with politicians and big money heavies and he did everything that he could to keep Tesla down.

Yes Don I didn't want to list the inventors and the brainiacs. Too long of a list. Lots of discoveries by Hungarians.
It was a way shorter list in entertainment.

You’ve probably tried to solve a Rubik’s Cube at least once in your life, but did you know that this brain-teaser is the brain-child of Hungarian Ernő Rubik? 2014 marks 40 years since this challenging little cube was invented and through the decades hundreds of millions have been sold.
Another Hungarian invention is the ballpoint pen, also known as the biro. It was invented by László Bíró in 1938 and replacing the quill and fountain pens, the biro is said to have changed the way we write.
Ányos Jedlik is thought to be the first to have made a soda water machine, while another Hungarian Joseph Petzval invented binoculars and opera glasses among other things.
The safety match was invented by János Irinyi in 1836.
Vitamin C was discovered by Albert Szent-Györgyi who won the 1937 Nobel Prize for Medicine, in part, for this discovery.
The tungsten lamp was created by the work of Hungarians Sándor Just and Imre Bódy among others.
Hungarians Donát Bánki and János Csonka invented the carburettor for a stationary engine that can be used, for example, in the machinery found in a factory.
While many others were working on creating the first helicopter around this time, in 1928 Oszkár Asbóth is credited with inventing one of the first.
The four-wheel carriage also known as a “coach” takes its name from the Hungarian word “kocsi” meaning "of Koch" – the Hungarian city where coaches were first made.
Meanwhile Hungarian Kálmán Kandó is known as "the father of the electric train" for his work designing the three-phase motor and generator needed for electric railways.
The inventor of soda water, Ányos Jedlik, also invented an early electric motor and car way back in 1828.
On a similar note the Ford T Model car was designed by Hungarian-American immigrant József Galamb.
In 1913 he was also a co-developer of the assembly line.
The prolific inventor, Béla Barényi, is - among many things -responsible for the basic design of the Volkswagen Beetle.
In fact his marvellous inventiveness means he has more than 2000 patents to his name and his contributions to car safety are significant. Co-inventors of the modern electric transformer are Hungarians
Ottó Bláthy, Miksa Déri and Károly Zipernowsky. This is cool because transformers are essential for many electronic devices. Ottó Bláthy also invented the AC watt meter and turbo generator.
Hungarian Tivadar Puskás invented the telephone exchange in 1877, while János von Neumann was the conceptual inventor behind digital computing.
Peter Károly Goldmark invented colour TV in about 1940, while in 1936 Kálmán Tihanyi described the principle behind the first plasma TV and flat-panel TV.
The high level programming language known as BASIC was co-invented in 1964 by Hungarian János Kemény. Another Hungarian Károly Simonyi started and headed the Microsoft applications group that was responsible for the hugely popular programs Word and Excel.
While this is not exactly a positive invention, Edward Teller (Teller Ede in Hungarian) invented the hydrogen bomb in the 1950s and had a role in creating the atomic bomb as a member of the Manhattan Project.
Fellow Hungarian Leo Szilárd also had a role in creating the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project, and Leo conceived the idea of the nuclear chain reaction and co-invented the nuclear reactor.
On another note, Dénes Gábor invented holography – the process of creating 3D images, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971 for this amazing invention.
