Not that I haven't had my share of impromptu quick walks and even a run or two, but they are almost never preceded by "fire in the hole"!

Usually its more like "hey whats that thing over there?"....."I dunno, but its smoking!"

or one of my personal favs...."Smoke One!....You wait here, I'll be right back!" (demo humor) (NOT to be used on new guys, they have a tendency to actually stick around the shot hole after popping smoke;)

"Fire in the hole" is the militarys way of letting everyone know that something dangerous, possibly lethal is going to go BOOM!

Uh well actually, the phrase "Fire in the hole" is a civilian blasting term for initiating your detonators after filling a shot hole at a quarry.
The first Blasters in the modern military where civilians who joined the SeaBees during WW2 and opened up the Blasting school.
EOD also relied heavily on the British and SeaBees when they came onto the scene.

If you want to know what we military guys would say when doing military type stuff its "Smoke One" or Two or whichever the numerical number is.
The warning fire in the hole is used because most people know it, however part of our civilian warning is "move away from the sound of my voice" But I'm not real fond of that one as it invariably will have some one come up on you and say"What did you say?"

I was taught at Fort Jackson, SC to yell 3 times "fire in the hole!". This was on the demolition range. We used dynamite, TNT and C4.
That carried over to Fort Benning. Ga, at Fort Gordon and then to Chu Lai South Vietnam.
I was a SSgt in the army infantry. We used "fire in the hole!"
The only other time when a different word(s) was used is when we tossed a live grenade. Then we yelled "grenade."
When we heard "smoke" in any form was when we heard "Smoke em if you got em." Or "Smoke out, identify!"

Ray, I wasn't saying the military doesn't yell fire in the hole. I was merely saying that it was a universal term carried over from civies. Sorry if I wasn't clearer.

Interesting history .... for no particular reason I always thought Fire in The Hole was from the old cannon days ..... when the guy with the torch touched the powder in the hole at the base of the barrel.

Arnie- Your version of fire in the hole is also correct..as it pertains to fire about to be applied to the touch hole of a cannon. Firing cannons came before any mine blasting.
