So, we want to build a 'monstrous' gyro with. Large payload capability. Say 700-1000#, Pilot & Payload, empty weight might be 1000-1400# ????? full of fuel. (say 2 hrs flight time) Ag spray, emerg supplies, whatever. Rough field capabilities. Aircraft grade engine, ?200-400? hp Let the ideas FLOW, gentleman's & Ladies ! Make gyros Work ?! fj

Rotax markets a radial... it is not cheap.
You will probably need 300+ HP at the minimum for that scale... there are a few large gyros out there with highly tweaked Sub 2.5's.
Might look at a Sub H-6 engine... not sure of the potential HP. Or an aircraft grade IO520... or a TSIO520G (that last one is turbo charge, fuel injected, and gear reduction... it is in the 400HP+ range... take your CC with you, it will cost a bundle!
Now for rotors... I wonder if there are rotors made that will lift that much weight...

You guys are pussys ! My suggestion would be the The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp , a twin-row, 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial aircraft engine. That thing is so cool !

I think you will need a bigger seat tank with my setup . Get ahold of Tommy Milton he could probably fix you up with a seat tank .

Brother Jim! My brother as been working on these engines since 1974, when he comes back from Mexico I'll ask him. but these are my thoughts. He has found Lycoming to be more dependable but not by much... they are both good engines.
The Most dependable would be the IO540 out of a Cherokee six 300. with 300HP, = lighter, cheaper and less complex too, can be purchased with more than 1/2 the time left for 8 to 15K with log books.! This is the one I'd use if 300HP is enough power. Else Use an TSIO540 300 to 380HP depending on the dash #'s at the end I do not remember which the dash #'s for the 380HP model. OR the Geared GSIO dash (something) And they are cheap because more complex and you have to baby the application of power with a GSIO 540... can be 380HP AND can be purchased cheap but it's geared requiring the pilot to manage power input more slowly. The Most dependable would be the IO540 out of a Cherokee six 300. with 300HP, = lighter, cheaper and less complex too! This is the one I'd use.

With me being 'not so smart', should I be lookin for an engine that is Relia[ble, Light, available and priced not toooo expensive - and meets the Hp requirements of the intended mission ?? Parts readily available, technicians who can fixum, etc ?!?!

Jim, If you are seriously thinking of an aircraft quality engine to replace the Sub on your TiggyB... I would look at the IO540 300HP from a Piper Cherokee-6 (see All_In's post above). Simple engine, easy to get parts for, anyone that knows much about aircraft can work on it, etc. The TSIO540G-380HP (that is Turbo- Supercharged, Injected, Opposed, 540 CU/In, Gear reduction drive), on the other hand, would require a person with experience on that specific engine... which would probably jack up the hourly rate double. With our barnstormer big boy toys... probably better to play the KISS method...

Jim- How about a pair of what's in my Helicycle, Solar T-62 turbines, both turned up to 150 horsepower. Of course you would need to design a very good variable pitch prop and gearbox as they run at 61,500 rpm. You may have to convert some of your spray tanks to haul kerosene instead.
Maybe it would be better to just put an IO540 in it.
Maybe I better just crawl back in my hole and shut up!

Ya know Stan, you bring out an interesting thought:
Throttle response on a gyro is important to flight... yet a turbine is kinda slow in that area.
OTOH: If one had a variable pitch prop, they could vary the prop pitch in place of a snappy throttle response.
HMMM... something to think about...
Anyone have any thoughts or experience with this?

I feel kinda privileged to be able to say that I must depend on others to 'guide' me on this dream Stan, I really (?) appreciate the twin ficking turbine idea, but would. I be remiss to ignore the IO 540 concept first ? I continue to see delllight in you 'letting yer hair down', and will strive to WEAR BOOTS when reading some of yer posts !!! fj

John- I installed an Ivo I flight variable pitch prop on my SparrowHawk...and loved it. Talk about nice being able to shift gears and climb out at low pitch.....then put it into overdrive and cruise with the rpm's much lower.
Only trouble is, after 40 hours , it was a maintenance ordeal. The electric contacs would fail and it would stick at that one pitch. I worked more on that prop in 6 months than my whole Helicycle has taken in almost 3.5 years of flying.
One time I had just turned crosswind when I heard and felt a thunk. I looked out the door and just happened to see something spinning and headed down into a guys yard. He was having a garage sale, and it missed them by about 100 feet.
I landed and noticed my prop had taken a little ding, but nothing major.
I went to the home and found my part off the prop. The people had heard something hit the ground.
It was fun to shift fears with a "tickle of the toggle".....but it needed to be more reliable. I sold the SparrowHawk, and then it got balled up anyway.

THX Stan for the information on you Sparrowhawk.
I had not thought of an after-market elec variable pitch prop, I was kinda more thinking of a hydraulic one driven by an aviation style engine... albeit it would need some work to adapt it to pusher rather than tractor configuration.
The idea of a variable pitch (constant speed) prop intrigues me... as you say: less bite for good climb out... then more bite for smoother and more efficient cruise.
I may seriously look into an aircraft style engine when I build a tandem gyro (next project after I finish the Subinator and get a hundred or so hours of pilot time in a light single). I am already playing with specifications and ideas... nothing concrete yet... so far: *A modified AirCommand style of frame *Tandem seating *CenterLineThrust *Heavy round tubing mast *A suspension of sorts (similar to, yet not the same, as a butterfly) *Body with 'convertible' top (removable top, for summer and winter flying) *Aircraft grade engine with hydraulic variable pitch prop Other ideas to follow....
Ahhh, dreaming about a design, part of the fun!!!
