Do you have a geeky 12 year old nephew that still has a desktop computer?
He may be able to hook it up and recover most if not all your data.

You sure it was a virus or did the hard drive give up?
Seriously you maybe able to put it in a desktop as a slave to get the data.
Otherwise it is big bucks to get a professional recovery establishment to get the data.

Back up your data!

Don't give up on that Hard Drive yet Hillberg. It may have failed for software reasons or hardware fault.
1. Reinstall it.
2. boot in a "SAFE MODE". As your computer restarts but before Windows launches, press F8. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
3. if the computer comes up, the screen will look large & ugly (no drivers loaded)
The implication here is that the HD is mechanically sound. (software problem)
4. Run your virus software and see what it detects. If nothing is found, run the program CHKDISK to look for
and fix any HD errors. Hope this helps Jerry :)

Ray's solution would work too

If you have a virus then;

AVG makes a recovery file that can be downloaded and installed on a cd or thumb drive. It doesn't use the windows operating system.
Here are the links. (I've gotten two computers back from the "FBI hijack virus this way)
Here is the link. Follow the instructions exactly.
http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd
And here is a video tutorial.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGX-592qty8
It takes a pretty good while because it does a thorough job of wiping out the virus.
After that download and install MalwareBytes and run a thorough scan.
I would try doing that first but I've had those two computers where the virus would not let me install or run anything named Malwarebytes, Search and destroy or any other virus cleaner.
If the virus is entrenched then the only hope is to boot and run from the cd or thumb drive with the AVG recovery tool.
As I said be prepared to spend most of the day doing all this.

If it is hardware, the drive itself, then a new hard drive is in order.

No but when that happens you do have an adware infection on your computer Ray! Use Hijackthis to clean it.

Find someone with a linux system and install the drive as a second drive on the linux system, unless the drive is damaged, the linux system should be able to read the drive. or for that matter if you can find someone to burn you a linux Boot CD or USB drive you could boot from the CD or USB in linux and recover the drive.

I use FireFox too.
Which ad blocker?
I have popups turned off and some still sneak through.

It is not going away Ray. You will need to clean the worm. I know exactly what you have. It turns certain words blue and ads will pop up. Pop up blocker won't help :(

What is the worm's name and how would I recognize it? Will HijackThis recognize it? I'm afraid to start deleting processes especially ones that I don't know what they do.
Just to be clear it does not happen often but only on certain websites (they're clean ones! I'm too old to be viewing porn sites.)
It only happens on Glenn Beck's site and this one.

It could be 2346978415623851956046516984 kinds......
You have to figure out what you have. Safesearch is a notorious one. Check you programs and see if by accident you installed it!
There are a lot of them out there.
Highjackthis can find stuff that doesn't belong there.
or check out some sites like this:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/i-have-random-words-in-all-websites-highlighted/42b655de-d042-48dd-a198-4a5d1dbefc11

If you want to ship me your hard drive I would be glad to see if I could recover your Data for you if you have not found anyone to do it yet.

I have a paid Data recovery program that runs in Windows, or it may just auto detect the drive in Linux,if the drive is not damaged and just the operating system gone.

let me know if ya want to to take a crack at it.
what size drive is it? IDE or Sata Drive?

all it will cost is shipping and if you want it put on a new hard drive, the price of a drive.
