A gyro should be a good as any other single engine aircraft at a long distance attempt like this. Maybe even better than FW from the perspective of being able to manage bad weather conditions. I am surprised though that they do not choose a closed cockpit machine like the M-22 - should make it much more tolerable for the pilot, particularly if they have fly at altitude to get above weather etc. Issues like range may limit most gyros, but of course this can be overcome with auxiliary tanks. When I read about most of the difficulties and failures of these attempts, they are very often an issue of politics and logistics - the last MTO attempt failed largely because of refusal by the Russians to allow flight through their airspace.
