Test data for: Power off climb simulation. Date 03/14/2015

Pilot: Desmon Butts

Aircraft MTO Sport 912 IS no passenger. Pilot weight 175. Fuel on board 10 gal.

Airspeed 90 KTS or 103 mph

Elevation 500 ft msl 350 agl

Conditions clear sky gusting 10 kt cross wind

Situation and location KDWH just after take off runway 35L 8015 ft with displaced threshold. 3500 feet runway remaining.

Procedure: Power reduced to idle, instant no hesitation climb initiated.

Altitude gained to best glide 55 kts

Results for three trials up wind: 50-55 feet max gain.

Total gain to 25 kts 70 total feet.

Conclusion: At 90kts one should not expect to gain more then 50 feet and maintain safe airspeed to attempt a landing. A pilot should not attempt to trade altitude for airspeed. This is because to regain the needed speed for safe flair requires more altitude then gained by dropping below best glide.

Further observations would show that in an actual failure the pilot would not have the reaction time to attempt the climb and would not have the same results.

This was done today to verify my point that someone in Idaho seems to think she can climb over 300 feet after total engine failure at 100 mph to land safe on a bluff at high altitude.

Now that's simply sexist and downright mean......I wonder what else is in that Desmon guy's titles that ain't kosher!
He obviously did the experiment wrong because when you fly in a canyon in the magic gyro the updrift from the canyon will alone lift you 300 feet towards the safer landing side.
Everyone knows that!
Nice try though.

I thought I just saved her life!!! I was doing a favor just incase I was a complete idiot. Nope I guess those calidus gyros are so slick they just slide to heaven like a BANANA being squished.

700 ft power off dive to 80 mph at 30 ft aft cyclic, balloon ,climb to 150 ft continue autorotation to next site balloon, pick a spot & land. A hop skip & jump.

Done in an R-22 and Bell 206 1983 young and foolish..... :bunny

Desmon- Now that is a show me type of test. You really need to post that on the RWF.

Way to go!

It came out just about what i thought. I just figured some others out in la la land might want the cold facts not speculation or some ones high high very high needing to get hi hopes.

when the engine dies I want to know what I can count on not what i wish i could count on.

I submit it was an unequal examination in that he was carrying and extra appendage she does not have.

On a serious note:
To settle this they need to get her to perform the event as she described with witnesses.

Ray, no reason to ruin a nice gyro to prove a dumb chick wrong...
Just smile and think, "thats why God gave yall tits"

I believe she isn't dumb. I believe she had her fixed wing thinking cap on at the time and even then unless she's in a glider it still won't get 300 feet!
The space shuttle had a better glide ratio than a gyro.

If she doubles down on her claim ......then she is dumb!

Good job Des. Looking forward to seeing you at BD. Are you bringing the gyro?
