From Wiki
The city was founded in 1876, and was named for its founder, Henry Addison DeLand.
It was customary to name settlements after their founders or in the case of villages, after the tribe.
Some places were given indian names long before the settlers arrived.
Wewahitchka for example, the city took its name from an American Indian word meaning water eyes. Two lakes along the edge of town look like a perfect pair of eyes.
But that's probably more than you wanted to know.........
History off!.......back to KDED fly-in.
