Glad to hear nothing serious happened... Someone is gonna get an @$$ chewing... I remember when I was in A&P school, I got a job on the field (Houston Hobby) at a corporate hanger... this happened. Thankfully I was nowhere near that panel for the last month. We made a temp panel and mounted it... then ordered the part from the factory. Plane flew once with the temp panel, then the new one was fitted. The panel was under the wing-root, it was about 4" wide and around a foot long... fitted lenghwise on the body. Not much behind it, other than a few large structural fasteners and a couple of hydraulic lines with fittings. The cavity was shallow. Pilot got off.... he knew and flew it back on the round trip... Book said it was a no-go issue.

Over the decades... I had access to pass-riding twice with the now defunct PanAm World Airways. Literally have been around the world more than once. The first time was in the 1970's... the golden age of aviation employment. The airplanes were seldom full... and employees could do all kinds of things they are not allowed to do now.
The main thing I dislike (intensely) about air travel now is TSA... a bunch of govt goons who think their s#it does not stink. Sadly... until the American population grows a set and tells govt types we would rather carry guns and defend ourselves than be herded like cattle... TSA will go forwards.
I am glad I am at a point where airline travel is no longer necessary... and I can choose to not do so anymore!

Portrait of a frightened man: Mr. Robert Wilson, thirty-seven, husband, father, and salesman on sick leave. Mr. Wilson has just been discharged from a sanitarium where he spent the last six months recovering from a nervous breakdown, the onset of which took place on an evening not dissimilar to this one, on an airliner very much like the one in which Mr. Wilson is about to be flown home - the difference being that, on that evening half a year ago, Mr. Wilson's flight was terminated by the onslaught of his mental breakdown. Tonight, he's travelling all the way to his appointed destination, which, contrary to Mr. Wilson's plan, happens to be in the darkest corner of the Twilight Zone.

Yep back in the good old days when you could carry a gun, there wasn't any of those rag-head hijackers, they wouldn't stand a chance... The TSA has ruined flying. Most of the travelling public think the TSA is run by the airlines, Most of the uninformed just dont have a clue about how over reaching our Gov has become... And if you think that panel coming off the wing is bad, just wait until they get all of the maintenance farmed out to china and mexico! I read an article a couple of weeks ago and it said an A&P mechanic in Mexico can make as much as $3.50 an hour!!!!! WhooooWee sign me up!

Just curious here... I know an A&P is supposed to sign off their work... So given this thing about the panel coming off in flight... will TPTB at Delta go through the books and discipline the mechanic that was supposed to secure that panel? Just curious how this is handled now-a-days. Agree air travel has been ruined! Back in the late 1970's when I was a 'baggage handler'... I worked part time (min 10 hours/week). For that, I got this card I carried in my wallet... I could just go to the ticket counter in the airport and get on standby to go anywhere I wanted. Usually I rode in first class (employees always did unless it was full), got to eat all the fancy food, drink the nice wines and liqueurs (free), I rode on the jump seat in the cockpit a few times, etc... literally went around the world in: Then Jimmy Carter deregulated the airlines... and the party was over. Now I am all for free markets... however in this case us spoiled airline employees got the butt end of the deal. Married a PanAm flight attendant in 1987... and traveled again for about 18 mos... Just was not the same. I was coming back from London in Sept of 1988, Customs decided I was the 'one'. They harassed me for 4 hours... then turned me loose when they decided there was nothing they could pin on me. I had discussed this with a pilot a few mos earlier... he told me to play dumb, do the yes-sir/yes-mam thing... and when they pushed you too much, act like you are loosing your composure (not angry, just emotionally shut down and let your voice start shaking). Seemed to work. The pilot told me (this was in 1988) Customs can jump your Constitutional rights and you will dis-appear in the system. Tearing this country apart so the elites can stomp on everyone... has been going on, probably longer than any of us alive. Shame, this country was an experiment in freedom... looks like few folks understand it enough to stand their ground and fight for it. OTOH: Libbies seem to be loosing ground recently. Hope this trend finds its way to the polls this November!

It actually ruptured some hydraulic lines and drained the right system.... Problem is, if it was a 3rd party, (contract) maint outfit, nothing will happen other than a sternly worded letter. We will see.
