Just some Gee wiz info, in case you wondered how many hours an airliner spends in the air throughout it's life..

Here are some numbers from one of ours..

Boeing 747 ship # 6305
Entered service Sept 1989
Retired Jan 2006
17 years
14,000 cycles (1 takeoff, 1 landing = 1 cycle)
113,325 hours

So, if you do the math...That is approx 12.9 years in the air! I guess the rest of the time was loading at the gate, and maintenance....

Awesome Scotty. Is it also true that there is not enough room at airports in the world to park all of the airliners in the world? :noidea

I have heard that at any time of every day, there is 5000 airliners in the air.... if there was an event that meant that aircraft cant be in the air, there isn't enough space to park them all... :pop :yoda2 :Wolvie

It looks to be about 20,000 to 25,000 lbs per hour depending on aircraft weight and altitude.
(25,000 / 6.8 lb gal. =3676.5 Gal per hour.
(20,000 /6.8 lb gal + 2941 Gal per hour.

Avg =3308 gal per hour x 113,325 hrs....

374,879,100 gallons.. 1,274,588.9 tons....... :realcrazy

Holey crap, I didn’t think it would be that much.
And that’s just one aircraft of how many at any time in the air?

I have read 5000 in the air at any time.... :eek

That is why, I have heard.... don't know if it is true, that if for some reason all airliners had to be out of the air at one time.... there is nowhere to park them all? Some would have to ditch in the ocean or try and land on roads... :noidea :yoda2 :Wolvie

How many planes had to land in the USA on 911? There is supposedly 5000 airliners flying world wide .... not sure how many are in the US at any given time.... looking on that flightradar shows most airliners over asia, the UK and europe.

You can see right now where airliners are.... if you hold the curser over any plane, it will tell you all about the plane/altitude/passenger number etc

https://flightaware.com/live/

You can pull the map around to look at USA or England etc

It is pretty fascinating really :eek :yoda2 :Wolvie

Yeah.... it is not so much the space they take up... but they have to be on tar or concrete.....

Even big airports cant have airliners stay long.... they only have a short time to refuel and a clean and restock of catering and they have to get going again, or else the planes on the way inbound wont be able to fit....

It is actually the same for ships on the ocean.... there isn't enough port docking space for all of them.... but at least they can anchor somewhere and sort of float indefinitely. :noidea

When you think about it.... even all of the semi trucks and even cars.... if there were no semis or cars/trucks/suv's on the road for some reason.... where would they all park? I guess there is always as many on the road as there are parked.... so if for some reason they all HAD to park..... wow! scary thought :eek :pop :yoda2 :Wolvie

Another gee wiz for you, Here at the big "D", as you can imagine fuel costs are a big deal,
1 penny in fuel cost adds up to $60,000,000 (yes that is 60 million) a year. So when jet fuel goes up a couple of cents, it is a big deal....
Also why they bought their own refinery in Pa. We brew our own and sell off the other stuff...
