Being Floridians we are used to hurricanes but this seems to be a little more excessive that I have ever seen on this coast. Jerry kind of hung around for a week though...... but we are lucky here having sand and allowing the water seep right through into the aquifer. Lot of hurt in TX. I hope they all have insurance and a way to recover. :eek

Dump 50 inches of rain anywhere and it will flood!

I think we're okay here.
Some minor flooding here, but nothing like last August when we got 30" over 3 days.
The water was within 6" inches from getting in the house that time. I never lost power or anything, but my septic system was flooded for a week and I had to shower off with the hose and shit in a 5 gallon bucket! Gotta get me a seat for next time. :)

We recorded 14.25" as of this morning at work, more to the west.
We got lucky when Harvey started pulling in dry air and wrapping it around over us. It pushed the rain bands further East towards New Orleans.

Before I came to work, I had boarded up my windows on the south side of the house just in case Harvey made a turn towards Louisiana. I had made the window covers years ago and keep them stored under the garage. I can put them up in about 20 minutes. I had also filled up my generator, stocked up 50 gallons of stabilized gas, filled up the car and truck, stuffed the fridge and freezer with bottled water, etc. All for nothing , but it was a good drill and I'll still be stocked up in case another one pops up.

And there is another one coming off of Africa that'll develop shortly, but I'm more concerned about a low area in the Bay of Campeche that is projected to move northward as it develops...

It's time for this one to be over though.
The good thing abut hurricanes vs. other natural disasters is that you can see it coming days ahead.
But the bad thing is... you can see it coming days ahead!

Muz,

Houston is fairly flat, close to the coast, and large with lots of concrete and asphalt. It floods with far less rain than this, but like Scott said, 50" of rain will flood anything, anywhere, and it won't drain until the tides drop.

Harvey just managed to get trapped between two high pressure systems, stalling it out.
Usually they blow through, and the next day it clears out.

When Hurricane Rita hit 12 years ago, everyone was worried about just this scenario. It was projected to stall out over land and just dump rain. Luckily it didn't, otherwise we would have had the same problems on top of the storm surge.

At least Harvey had a chance to weaken before looping back into the Gulf, or else we would be flooded out again from the storm surge.

We still have abandoned houses from Rita, and from Ike 3 years later.

Just off the phone with Mike Grosshans to see how our Chapter 62 members fared ... looks like all but Keith stayed dry ... the club hangars ...are no wetter than after a "normal heavy rain" ... the inundation of nearby Baytown & Beaumont had me worried for our club ... but the media focus ...always makes it look worse! :realcrazy

the resurfacing of the airport runway will be delayed ... so who knows if they will be done by Oct 1 schedule ... to allow our flyin to go ahead this year!???? :badluck
