I like that trick. It inspired me (15 years ago) to build a little demo of how you can transduce magnetic energy into kinetic energy. Basically you align a few ball bearings in a row, in a channel to hold them straight. Then secure the first one so it doesn't move. Then you take a spherical magnet of the same size as the ball bearings and start it a few inches before the secured ball bearing. When the magnet is attracted to the ball bearings, it accelerates and then impacts the ball bearing. The kinetic energy is transferred (through the row) to the last ball bearing in the row and shoots down the channel because it's outside the reach of the magnets field. Neat hunh? I love science. |

We learned not to let skin get between two of them. Instant blood blister! Dropped them down a 3 foot piece of copper tubing and it took a while for them to drop out the bottom. Something else too was we tried it with aluminum and it appeared the aluminum made the magnet drop slower. The difference was the wall thickness of the tubing. The aluminum was thicker. And the magnet would stick to the outside of the tube and slide slowly downward. Try it. |

Magnets are one my favorites Gary. The funny thing is, they are largely misunderstood. Such as the misconception that their fields are static when in fact they are moving approximately the speed of light. I think quantum theory explains a lot but it will take years before it becomes mainstream knowledge. |

Smersh, If you used an electromagnet and uped the amperage to smack the stack, do you think you might get the fly-away ball to go fast enough to become a projectile? We tested a "Rail Gun" at YPG, but the power requirements were absurd, and they didnt use a smack ball. |
