It's all about what excites you. Most fixed wing pilots never get to experience how much fun slow and low ultralight flight, gyro flight is. Most of us that have ultralight and gyro experience never will experience an even slower mode of flight that you are experiencing with your backpack flying. That has to be a thrill all its own. Then there are those very few that have taken off with helium balloons tied to a simple lawn chair. It's whatever level of excitement you want to experience. Good on you Henry for finding what excites you. |

Was just reminiscing about all our flying adventures Dave, I sure do miss flyin with you. As for leaving Guam, it might happen a week from now or a year. We have contracts won for the next year of work already, but there are other things to consider. Moms not getting any younger, and I have been offered a lucrative project in Port Angles WA. to begin sometime soon. I just don't have a great answer yet, but I promise you this, I WILL be returning.... and when I do, I'm going to be needing to fly....I may be looking at a fixed wing amphibian like an Aventura II or a SeaRay..... or hell who knows, maybe a gyro. I do miss it when its windy. hope your doing well bro, miss you. B |

interesting thoughts on flying over water, in the bay the depth of water is between 2 feet and 5 feet. As an ex navy diver, I know just how much trouble you can get into in shallow water! (the VSW or Very Shallow Water mines can be severely problematic for lots of reasons besides the boom) I had always planned on ditching my rig at the 5 to 10 foot height if engine out over the water, even though I fly with an Agama float ring I don't want to be in the spaghetti mess of kevlar lines in the water.....(this is against what paramotor schools teach, but I was WIC qualified as an Navy jumper).... So, if going down in 2 to 5 feet of water, just try to make a standing landing of course, but what if the water is just a bit deeper? now your committed. What would you guys do? |

Gabs, my wife liked your answer... I think a big panicking Hungarian in a chute in the water would look like the guy in Lethal Weapon who gets shot near the pool. Heres another thought....if you ditch the gear and successfully splash and then resurface, any amount of wind will be blowing your gear across the water. As your floatation is attached to your rig you most likely will not catch up to it, but will tire yourself out trying. This happened to my me and my team off the coast of San Clemente. We did a rubber duck insertion out of a C130 at 600 feet. Wben the boat landed we were about 50 yards down wind of it. The drouges filled with air and it was Sionara Sister Susan! We couldnt hope to swim fast enough to catch up to it. Support came by and dragged a chute line over to us.....if it had been a real op instead of training we wohld have been blown. So you see, theres lots to consider when going for a water/parachute/paraglider op. |
