I got on my cousins combine as he was combining one of our farms. In 2014 our farms averaged 216 bushels an acre. This year is going to BLOW those yields away. This combine has onboard yield readouts per acre, gives the moisture content of the corn, and lots more information. Even maps each farm showing where the yields drop down...and that information is fed to the fertilizer applicator. It will throw on extra fertilizer in these lower areas, and cut back on the areas that are producing real high. One picture shows a snapshot of the corn making 270 bushels an acre..... and the other one showing 254 bushels per acre. lowest it ever got down so far is in the low 240's and the highest was over 320 bushels to the acre. Averaging around 260 plus. These numbers are being verified as our grain bins are being filled. They have a grain cart that meets the combine as it unloads corn on the go. That combine doesn't shut down the grain bins are full. It was just a super storm of ideal weather conditions this year....plus superb seed genetics, chemicals, lime, and fertilizer. My cousin is doing an awesome job for my sister and I. |

And to think as a young boy I spent many a yr de-tasseling corn to make summer $$. Do ppl even do that anymore? |

Scott- Thanks! The beans are busting our farm records also. I never had it in my gut to farm, and went down my own path. But since dad passed away, I like being involved. I basically give permission to what is required of me so that my cousin can be turned loose to get our high yields. The more bushels an acre, the more he gets, and the more my sister and I get. Farming is extremely expensive per acre. You need yields or high prices. Right now the prices are way down as is typical at harvest time. Dad put up nice grain drying and storage on all of our farms. Speaking of drying, not only are today's hybrids high yielding, they also dry down to 15% moisture by the end of September. We used to spend thousands of dollars on LP gas for our corn dryers. Don't even need to burn one gallon this year. That should make Ovomit and the global warming people happy.. |

I can remember when my father in law was really happy with getting 103 bushels per acre. No my oldest son is farming that land. |
