. Yup ... it is hovering .... I watched a De Havilland Beaver do vertical takeoffs and landings like that ... cold winter air , steady 50 mph wind (stall speed of the De Havilland was 42 mph) . |

You will have to ask birdie that one Evidently it isn't hovering, it is actually flying into the wind but remaining stationary over a spot on the ground due to the relative airspeed of the wind and the engine thrust matching the speed of the wind.... which COULD easily just be described by the word HOVERING.... but, unfortunately, that word has been patented for helicopter use only.... so you cant say a hot air balloon, a plane or gyro hanging in the wind, or a drone is hovering because that would evidently be a breach of patent as none of those are helicopters and only helicopters can hover even if it is only for a short time and at or below certain altitudes So no, it is definitely unable to hover, since it is an airplane..... So, it only 'appears' to be hovering to the normal scum grade humans (those who cant fly helicopters) But.... it looks like hovering... to me.... so, I must be scum too? http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hover http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hovering http://www.thefreedictionary.com/hover http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/defin ... lish/hover http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Hovering I actually think you can say it IS hovering... but only if you pay homage to heli pilots and constantly mention that you don't mean 'hovering' in the patented helicopter sense, but in the sense of a mere bird or something shittier than a helicopter.... then I think it would be fine to refer to it as hovering (unless you are a helicopter pilot) Hey!! you are a helicopter pilot.... so you might almost be able to decide for yourself?? |

If that is hovering....then what do you call what a helicopter does without mother nature breathing at it? Has to be a new word invented for it then! Ha Has nothing to do with what you fly....I am unbiased...J have flown gyro's ..."hovering" many times...with a lot of wind.... also in a helicopter all the time .....often without wind. There is a big difference doing it in a helicopter.....so what word do we use for a totally different operation? |

How does the rotational speed of mother earth fit in ?? fj |

FJ- Excellent question. An aircraft hovering must keep its rotational speed slightly higher than the spot on earth he is hovering over. Wind or no wind....the aircrafts rotational speed must be higher...its a fact! |

Gabor- You hit the grand slam! Levitating! That's it exactly! By dictionary definition, that airplane is indeed hovering. Now a helicopter, or a Harrier...or an F35 can levitate! |

You ca do this in a stock 152 at Bullhead City airport! Went up to get my ticket and the ex marine cfi asked me if I was a timid pilot? After 5 years in an open seat gyro???? HELLS NO SAYS I! So we waited for the wind that comes through the mountain pass each evening and I touched her down right on the numbers. I guess I should have known enough to be nervous, but you know what they say about Navy Divers..."Smart like tree, Swift like stone" |
