Is there an award for first wrecked gyro of the year? If so I win. On New Years day at about 11:00 am I made some really bad Aeronautical Decision Making while doing crow hops at a friends private field. Carb Icing MAY have been a contributing factor, but not recognizing the conditions would still make it my fault.
Those who were present may have come away from this tragedy believing a miracle took place. I know I did.
I got up and walked away with some bumps and bruises and my bell rung.
My beautiful gyro was destroyed. She gave her life for mine. (men seem to understand this connection to inanimate objects, women not so much. This is the reason you KNOW the ****ing coffee table tried to take your toe off in the middle of the night.)
I will not be posting pics. I don't wish to answer questions at this time. But I felt that some people might want to know why I'm not flying at fly-ins and such.
I will not stop flying, but for now, with no gyro, it is rental of fixed wings for me at the local FBO.
I know after all my posts and the account of Dougs accident you are all expecting a good evaluation but frankly my heart is broken and my body is sore and I just don't feel like it.
To all my brothers in the gyro community, take a moment and try to objectively look at the things you do in your gyro. Are there any unnecessary risks? Are you flying callously or cautiously?
Until later,
Via con dios, Mi amigos.

everybody screws up! Glad your ok and not damaged for life. I'm certainly guilty of flying too low for the terrain conditions.

Sorry to hear you banged up your gyro... yet glad you are not hurt... well physically... I am sure your ego will need a few days of healing... When/IF you feel like it... those of us who are still learning to fly gyro's would appreciate some pointers as to what NOT to do... Again, glad you are physically not hurt! John/GA

I can sympathize very much with you. After I had destroyed my machine I had the very same reaction. I was going to take a break and re-think if this was in my future. A year and a half later things sure do look way different. I just hope that time will do it's job. Grateful for your physical well being. Sorry for your bird. Damn things just self destruct so quickly....... Please hang around and be part of the family. We are after all family.

DAMMIT!!! Didn't need to come out of internet black-out down here in the OZZIE boonies to hear one of our own had just wrecked!!! SO glad to hear you are still sunny-side-of-the-sod & will regroup to fly again. VERY SORRY ... to hear about your "beloved" .... she did good by you & took the hit so you could walk away! ( ...so I'm a weird-one by gal standards ... my "connection" to inanimate objects & esp. my ( blood-sweat&tears) gyro are VERY REAL!!! ) BUGGAH - in spades!!!look-foward to the analysis & lessons-to-share when you are up to relating details!

Did you by any chance run automotive gas that day? I personally don't use anything but 100LL and pre mix it. It is becoming more and more obvious that the ethanol mixed with gasoline is more prone to icing. That's why I am asking. You may have had that happen to you. I am just thinking out loud....

Funny you should mention this Gabbs... I have had 2 bad tanks of gas in my service van (enough to cause the engine to sputter) in the last couple of months... after not having bad gas in many a year. I wonder if there is something going on with the quality of auto gas these days??? I hear some folks mix AVGas 1:4 with pure auto gas (no ethanol). Does anyone have experience with this approach?

When I owned my two planes that was all I burned was high grade auto gas . I would never do that today . The auto gas we get today is crap .
