.

Pretty impressive teamwork

In 1995 I had 15 of those huge Elms in my yard and had to cut them all down because they died of Dutch Elm Disease. The largest one was over 4 feet at the base and I counted 140 rings of growth so it would have started growing in 1855

I only had a 20" bar on my chainsaw so I had to first cut out chunks around the stump so the saw could reach the center

I ended up burning it thru the years in my wood stove , gave off heat like coal and burned all night . That had to be the hardest wood I ever split , the grains or whatever you call them are so interlocked they cannot actually be split like most wood , I would cut a 12" slab off the tree , wait till it was -30* and then chip the frozen chunks off the edges , I got so hot and sweaty doing it I always said that wood heated me twice. It was a shame to burn it , I had some 36" X 40 foot nice straight lengths.

A big beaver will take down a big tree.

My country acreage was on a river about 6 feet deep and about 35 feet wide with lots of beavers living there.

After all my big Elms died I planted about 40 trees around the yard , I would buy the cheap leftovers from the nurseries at end of season and most of the trees grew until they were about 4-6" at the base.

Beavers never ever came into my yard , they had lots of other forest to play in , every fall they poke sticks in the mud bottom of the river so they have food for the winter. When the water freezes it holds the twigs in place.

Early one winter we had freak warm temperatures and rain , the river rose about 12" , lifted the ice and beaver branches up and washed all their food downstream.

The next night all the beavers went into emergency mode , came into my yard and chewed down my 40 trees and hauled the branches to the river to replace the food they lost.
