The team struck a sentimental note when they announced that a heart-shaped formation on Pluto, first visible to New Horizons from 70 million miles away, wouldn't be known as Pluto's heart anymore. They informally renamed it Tombaugh Reggio, after the man who discovered the planet, Clyde Tombaugh, and whose ashes—aboard New Horizons—are currently headed out of the solar system. |

I find this mission exciting. Last of the original 9 planets in our solar system to take a look at. No humans alive on the planet will get this opportunity again. This is so microscopically miniscule in comparison to if we could get to the nearest star. In comparison....it takes signals from Pluto 4.5 hours to get back to earth. Those same signals would take 4.3 YEARS from our nearest star.....and that would still be a microscopically minuscule trip in comparison to traveling 100,000 years at the speed of light just to cross our Milky Way galaxy......and even that would still be microscopically miniscule in comparison to having to travel at the speed of light for 14 billion years to get to the farthest galaxy that our equipment can detect. I personally think that even that trip would be microscopically miniscule in comparison to what's left out there that we cant see. I am in constant awe of this universe. It humbles me just thinking how microscopically miniscule we are.....but in Gods eyes....we are as great as the universe. |

Arnie- I noticed that last see when googling. Streator is close to me and I have flown there in my gyro and helicopter. I find it interesting about his ashes leaving the solar system. Carl Shumakers ashes are on the moon. He was the co discoverer of the comet Shumaker/Levy 9 that started impacting Jupiter 21 years ago from this very day....July16th, 1994. It impacted Jupiter with 21 fragments over a period of 7 days. Today is also the 70th anniversary of the first time earth experienced an atomic bomb explosion. Rather significant timings in my opinion. |

Due to the painfully slow data link between Earth and the spacecraft, over a distance of nearly three billion miles, it will take New Horizons until 2016 before it has sent back everything it recorded. And it continues heading out through the solar system and who knows what else it might see. The nuclear powered machine is expected to last another 20 years. |
