A boy about 6 years old climbed into a Mayo Clinic helicopter at an air show near Mankato and fired up the engine, setting off a tense scene on the tarmac until a worker removed the child and shut off the chopper, a witness said Monday.

The incident occurred Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Minnesota Air Spectacular at the Mankato Regional Airport.

The whirring rotor blades knocked over a large sun shield on the tarmac, and two people were hit and slightly injured by the fabric-like screen, according to a statement released by Mayo.

The helicopter is operated by Mayo Clinic Medical Transport and is based at the Mankato airport for emergency runs in a 150-mile radius.

A member of Mayo’s aviation team shut down the helicopter, according to a statement issued by the clinic.

You would think they would at least pull the circuit breaker.....but it is a eurocopter..so I know nothing about them, except they are easily started by an 8 year old...

actually a 6 year old can start them.

Whats that say about the ability required of chopper pilots these days:) The automation in a modern turbines is now pretty extraordinary, obviously just a push of the button is required and the computer does the rest.

There was a hole hell of a lot more to starting a HH-1K HUEY GUNSHIP then an 8 year old could muster .
Or maybe it just seemed more complicated to me .

WOLVERINES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently some of the modern turbines have a single "push-to-start-button" ... and then a computer takes care of the rest including the fuel flow ... it prevents costly hot-starts

The Mayo 'copter was on display at the airshow but also on call and ready to go if they needed a medivac .... the kid must have jumped in and hit the right button.

The late Mick Sharp was an old timer British pilot who found an abandoned HUEY in Argentina during the Falklands war , he knew how to fly helicopters but did not know how to start a Huey so him and his buddy kept flicking switches and pushing buttons until it burst to life

It had some terrible vibrations but they got it home and then did not know how to shut it off so they just cut the fuel and waited for everything to stop turning.

The mechanics found someone to translate the Spanish Manuals so they fixed everything and used it to haul freight and mail around the islands.

Later they took it to Britain , re-badged it as G-HUEY and display it at airshows

Here it is at the 2013 Air Britain Fly In along with some nice music for you Scary Gary .....

What does that incident say about asshole parents?
This society is soooooo screwed!
Where were the parents of that kid????
My mother would have broken both my arms if I touched anything that wasn't mine......
:noidea
