In case you are ever in Rekyjavick Iceland...... I have heard that stopping by the phallus museum, is a must do event of a lifetime. Where else can you get a selfie with a whale pecker? I think cold weather freezes your brain... |

I knew that SOME point in my life, the opportunity to share this bit of stored useless personal experience would arrive, and here, of all places, it is: The Bahama Islands are known for Conch, a large sea snail that scavenges the reef floors sporting a helical shell. Beyond the food value of the animal, the shells are sought as decorations. It is not surprising, then, to find a variety of ways to eat Conch. There's Conch salad (raw conch), Conch chowder (steamed and grated, not unlike clam chowder), and the ever popular Cracked Conch...a name I could never figure out, as it just means "breaded and fried." There is nothing "cracked" about it. They don't crack the shells, as they are too valuable. They merely pop a phillips screwdriver in a particular part of the helix, killing the snail and breaking the vacuum so it just slides right out of the shell. The above dishes are the typical restaurant fare. However, if you venture to the docks and stop at one of the many Conch salad outdoor vending stands, you will find another offering. Each Conch salad stand has its own Conch salad recipe and all the vendors claim theirs is the oldest, best, yada-yada-yada. The individual pitches vary slightly, but come into lock-step during the "bonus round." The pitch goes like this: "Oh ya mon, I got a special deal fo ya. A extra fiver will getcha this speciality (at which point, a large Conch penis is plopped on top of your Conch salad). Ya eat one of these mon, an right away ya lady be expecting a nice, brown, little baby. Guaranteed!" That part of the Conch salad pitch never changes from vendor to vendor. I always wondered if it ever occurred to any of them that perhaps having "my lady" expecting a "nice, brown, little baby" might not necessarily be cause for celebration on a variety of fronts. I have, to date, passed on the speciality. |
