When I was 2&a hlf, our family moved 2& a hlf miles to the house I live in now. (With the Honorable Mrs Toevs !) Tis the same property my ggggrandfather homesteaded in 1875. Live here because I want to, will move one-day, no idea when. Good things, not so good things, WTH ?!?
Anyone here lived in the same house for more than 57.5 years ??

I moved here to be near my parents, because they are in their late 80's and when I lived 750 miles away, I couldn't help them. It is handy that there is a bit of gyro action around here, not a lot of flying other than hangar flying, but there are gyros around.... unfortunately not so many basic machines, mostly titanic class

I was born in Rome, GA and bounced between Rome and Fort Lauderdale, FL for most of my youth. Summers in Georgia, Winters in Florida, more for my father's health than anything else. He developed tuberculosis in the early 40's and Rome had one of the main facilities for treatment in the Southeast. There he met my mother and I hatched along with my siblings.
My father's condition eventually "improved" to asthma, and became readily treatable in the 1970's. We said goodbye to Rome and moved permanently to Fort Lauderdale, FL, his childhood home. He passed away in 1993, and I began making plans to move back up to this area. In 1996, I was able to say goodbye to Fort Lauderdale. I always preferred it in NW Georgia, and the crime rate in Fort Lauderdale by then was "spectacular." By 1996, I couldn't wait to be anywhere else.
I started looking around for some place to buy in the NW Georgia area late in 1996 and was getting nowhere. I knew I was tired of living in "the big city," but wasn't having any luck finding an area I wanted by driving around on my own. Realtors generally leave me cold. One night, I took the Bonanza up and flew around looking for areas of dark. The next day, I went to a realtor with a map I'd made a big circle on and said, "show me all the farm property listings in this area." the circled area was the largest area of dark I could find. That worked, and here in Taylorsville, GA I have been ever since.
I have been based at 3 airports since. First, Marietta (RYY), a controlled airfield, then Rome (RMG) a large uncontrolled field, and finally Cedartown (4A4) a ghost town, save for the meat bombs. Each time, down-sizing. It was while I was at Rome that I started seeing gyroplanes regularly and they finally captured my interest.
It bears mentioning that I recently found that I "live too rural for Taylorsville." Though it says "Taylorsville" on my driver's license and that is my proper address. We had an election for Mayor last year and I didn't have the Mayoral race on my ballot. When I asked why, I was told (and I quote), "Oh, your address must be past 1 statute mile from the flashy-lighty thing." We have a flashing yellow light at the 4-way stop in the center of town. Apparently, if you live more than 1 statute mile from the "flashy-lighty" thing, you are too rural for Taylorsville...or at least too rural to be allowed to vote on city business.

I live here because the bastard communists destroyed everything that was meaningful in life. They also destroyed the hope and the chance to make it better. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Although I am seeing the same bastards starting to chip away little by little the same way in my new home. I truly hope that I don't ever have to go anywhere ever again.....I really like it here....... I used to like to live in the country that had 2000 years of history and culture with its own language and heritage.......but then the patriotic feelings were betrayed by politicians and they turned fathers against sons, friends against friends and every day people started hating and doing bad things to one another. Out of fear. Fear of losing what they had. They didn't have a lot the begin with. They started being mean to one another and just for the kicks held people back from advancing. When I look around I am starting to fear here too. I am seeing the same trend lately. We have people who will do bad things based on color of skin, political affiliation, religious differences. I am by no means paranoid but the same mentality is seeping in and it frightens me for my kid's sake. Not mine. I don't give a shit. If they piss me off I will just massacre them but I sure don't want it to get that far. When I see someone who was lucky enough to be born here and takes steps towards committing a crime in the name of a sick ideology......it does make me wonder.......it does make me re-evaluate. Why I live here in Florida? If civilization happens to break down....the chances of living a little longer than the large masses is better. We won't freeze to death if energy is not available. We have shitload of drinking water. We do have a much more favorable survival environment than the average. Besides I can always get to the dumpster before any retiree.....

San Diego is very unique in the US it has the best weather year round, no humidity, few bugs, few animals trying to kill you in the wild and no hurricanes. 65 years now with earthquakes and all of them have only been a fun ride without anything falling over or off our walls EVER!
But that not why I live here. The only down size it is controlled by liberals and taxes, fees, and regulations are out of site.
However here is why. The beach is only 15 min's away with waves in our bay bigger than on the east coast on a big wage day. Small wave days are like 3 to 4 feet surf. So in 15 min's I can be babe watching, surfing, scuba-diving, wave jumping Sea Do's, Sport fishing is unreal catch a Marlin a week if you wish and most other fist too, Sailing etc. And I do them all from time to time because I can in 15 min's. Then there is driving anything up the coast I prefer a chopper.
I can fly year round in shorts!!! Although anything below 60 and we add socks to our sandals and put on a snow suit. LA is only 40 min's away by air and Las Vega 1.5 hours.
Or the mountains are only 30 to 45 mini's away with camping, rock climbing, Spelunking, hang gliding of a mountain that drops 4000 feet straight down to the desert, gold panning, and hunting, although are game is sparse and look like small version compare to everywhere else. I like to do all those things too.
Or there is the desert about an hour with sand dunes that go on forever where you can camp-out with friends and race dune buggies and bikes jumping 40 to 100 feet between dunes.
Then maybe the best thing is Mexico is only 20 min's am I'm at a Mexican fiesta and the party is always on, Cabo San Lucas is only 5 hours away by air at the tip of Baja with some of the best fishing in the world, San Flipie and LA Bay is only about 30 min's away.
And there is so much more.... and I use them all. It is never boring and full of action!
Many times we have played in the snow in our mountains in the morning and a beach party riding Sea-Do's with a cook-out that night all in the same day. Where else can you do that?

Been going to Bar's in TJ Tijuana Mx since I was 15 year old when it was the wild wild west back in 1967 or 66 and people think it's wild now. They have no idea, there was this donkey woman show, and she was queen of the whory crew... I still remember the song. I cannot describe, in public, what she did on stage... Very tame now and they still say it wild, really they have no idea.

I live here because of my job, used to be you could work for an airline at any airport, now just the big hubs and all the smaller airports maintenance is contracted out. But the cost of living here is low and the taxes are low, and I like it out here in the country, plus I have my own airstrip and hangar, plus it usually does not snow in the winter and is is not as hot as 40 hells in the summer like it is where Gabor lives!

No I blame that on 1968 and forward... when we switch to SEX, Drugs, and Rock in Roll in that order as it was the free love generation what a party!

Jon my grandmother was went to the Batty? hospital in Rome Georgia back in the 1950's. I remember the long drive from Sylvania, Georgia there and back My mom, dad, grandpa and my uncle Floyd went to visit her. It was the only time I saw my grandma kiss my grandpa. She did not ordinarily believe in "mixing slobber." Poor grandpa.
It was later determined that she was a carrier but did not suffer the disease nor did any of the rest of us.

Yes, I run into more people than you might expect that have similar medical history involving Rome. That facility is long gone now, though. Last I heard they were planning to build "affordable housing" on the site.

I take it that translates into slums?
