Manta Rays cruising in New Smyrna

Saw a couple of Manta Rays or maybe Mobulas cruising right off the beach in New Smyrna on my flight today. Also a turtle or two, and what I thought was a big shark - it disappeared before I could circle and get a decent pic. Mantas were cool though.

I love to watch them swim. Sometimes you get to see the Manatees at the inlet just chillin' and of course the dolphins and sharks.
People don't have the slightest idea how busy the water is around them  _________________  A walk in the woods helps me relax and release tension. The fact that I am dragging a body should be entirely irrelevant! A simple thank you would have been enough for the morning coffee without all that "how did you get in here" nonsense. |

When I flew to Bensen Days via Tampa / St. Pete, the jet would descend into Tampa over the gulf and I was amazed at the various critters I could make out in the water.

And they taste much better than Manatees.

There are two main species of mantas, Giant Mantas and the smaller Reef Mantas. Actually I think those in the surf pictures are actually Mobulas they usually grow to about 4 feet wingspan. These look a bit bigger than that which is what made me think at first they were mantas, but it's apparently pretty rare for Mantas to come in so close. Diving with Mantas is pretty awesome! |
