. Here is my mole killing story In 1986 I bought a nice little rural acreage that used to have a small cattle barn on it back in the 1930's and when the farmer cleaned the manure out of the barn every day he threw it into a swamp hole out back 50 years later that manure had composted into the nicest fertile garden soil you could ever wish for Trouble is the moles liked to dig tunnels all through it so there was only one thing I could do ..... BLOW THEM MOLES UP !!!!!! In my body shop I used a lot of industrial strength Lacquer Thinners to clean my paint guns and equipment and had a bunch of 5 gallon cans of the old dirty thinners I needed to dispose of. I poured 10 gallons down a mole hole , tossed a match in , but all I got was a little whoosh of flame , then one of my coffee shop buddies said I needed a spark to make an explosion , an open flame just burns for a short time until the oxygen is consumed and then it self extinguishes. So I hooked a lead wire and ground wire to an old sparkplug , pushed it way down the mole hole , put in another 10 gallons of volatile thinners , covered the hole and gave it time to vaporize underground . Then I hooked the wires to my lawnmower , spun the magneto to make a spark and KABOOM !!!!! It was just like that movie Caddy Shack , dirt and fire and flames blew out of a whole bunch of mole-hole-entrances all over my garden. Most fun I ever had on a Saturday afternoon. Trouble is it set fire to the old cow manure deep underground and it was smouldering away all week , my farmer neighbor said it would burn for years is I didn't put it out.. It took a 10hp waterpump with a 2" hose running for 3 days before I got it stopped. A normal person with moles in the garden would simply have bought a $3.98 mole trap and solved the problem ...... BUT I AM ABNORMAL AND DO NOT WANT TO CHANGE !!!!!!!!

We used to embed shotgun shells in a dirt bank and try to hit the primer from 50 yards with a 22. They blow up real nice when you get a hit.

. Years ago Pepsi made a 2 liter plastic bottle with a wide cap on it. I would drill a nice hole in the lid , get a bunch of used tire valve stems from the Goodyear shop and pop them into the lid with a bit of silicone to seal it. Fill the Pepsi bottle half full of water , put the lid on and then about 50 psi of air Makes a hell of a good blow up target and cost nothing A little Crown Royal mixed while consuming the Pepsi , can add to the fun Way too much Crown Royal makes a guy get ideas like putting a cup of gas in the bottle , 75 psi air , and a candle burning behind the target for ignition when you hit it. Way way way too much Crown Royal and a guy starts trying to figure out how to get a lawnmower sparkplug inside the bottle

My mom's three stage rocket made of pine straw.
Many moon cycles ago back when I was about 6 years old my mom and a neighbor were raking up pine straw. She had raked it into a pile and tried to burn it but it was too damp to stay lit. So she took a good portion off the top of the pile and poured some old gas on it. She put more pine strsaw on top of that and poured more gas. Then a third healthy pile on top of all of it. She "had done this before" so we were told to stay back out of range. She poured a "long fuse" and lit the end. For some reason the ignition sequence went perfectly. The first or booster pile lifted off carrying the other two stages with it at about an altitude of about 20 feet before the 2nd stage ignited and carried the top stage another 20 or more feet. I have tried and tried and have never been able to duplicate the perfect ignition sequencing she got.

Growing up in communist Hungary we did not have cool western toys like those. No guns owned by individuals. No chance to make dangerous exploding things right? Soooo our version was one long threaded 1/2" bolt put a nut on it and turn the nut two turns. Shave off the heads of matches. Fill the nut with it and carefully compact it by using another 1/2' bolt very carefully turning it and tighten it down. Once the nut filled with match shavings use some soldering wire to wrap around the head of one bolt to make it heavier than the other side. Fold up a paper tent flattened so it acts like dart and put the other bolt through it right in the middle. Find a friend who lives in a condo with balcony. Wait for the victim to walk under and drop the bomb. Voila

Bicycle wheel spokes. Speaking of match heads...we used to pack the red stuff off match heads into these. Then we would screw a spoke into the slotted end. Hold a match on the barrel until it went off like a .22 on steroids. I had one fail by splitting open like a daisy.

When I was a kid I seen Tommy Milton and Dick Dick Wunderlich pack match heads into an empty CO2 bottle . Then they stuck a fuzz into the hole and stuck it into a pice of pipe and then lit the fuzz . That thing shot out of there like a rocket . It was amazing being around those guys .

No but she did work as a welders assistant during WWII building ships.

That is my favorite picture of my Grandma . I was home on leave from Navy bookcamp and AD/A school 1982 just before I went to the Philippines for two years . That picture was taken at the Decatur Illinois Airport. When I was in High-school I would skip school and fly down to Decatur to spend the day with my Grandma .
